Auditions & Casting

The Audition Process

Paths to the Stage

CenterStage offers two types of audition processes, depending on the production. Each program page clearly indicates whether auditions take place before or after registration.

Whether it's your first show or your tenth, you'll find a welcoming environment where the goal is growth, not perfection. Our directors take the time to get to know every student, and every cast member plays an important part in the production.

Auditions at CenterStage Theatre Company
1
Audition after registration

Many of our productions and summer camps do not require an audition before enrollment. Students register first, and all participants are guaranteed a role in the production.

Auditions for specific roles are held during the first few days of the program. After students have had time to get comfortable and work with our instructors, roles are assigned and rehearsals move forward.

Unless otherwise noted on the program page, no specific preparation is required for these in-class auditions. Students are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the script, story, and music if available.

2
Audition before registration

Some productions require an audition before students may register.

Auditions allow our creative team to thoughtfully place students in roles that support both individual growth and the overall success of the production.

There is no fee to audition. Tuition is required only for students who are cast and accept a role.

Students may audition in person or submit a video, as outlined on the program page. Preparation requirements and deadlines are specified for each show.

Our Approach to Casting

Every Role Matters Here

At CenterStage we understand the complexities of casting students for performance. We take the process very seriously and work hard to ensure that all students are engaged by the collaborative effort needed to put on a play, and that every student finishes our production experience with a positive feeling.

Our programs are designed to prepare young adults who will be excited about creating theatre and not overawed by the desire to be "the Star." Success in the theatre is most often a product of intense desire, great dedication, and willingness to participate in a collective, collaborative, and creative process.

Inclusive Casting

CenterStage practices inclusive, gender-neutral casting. We regularly adapt roles to fit our cast, including changing the original gender of a character when it serves the production and the performer. Casting decisions are made based on each student's strengths, growth potential, and the needs of the ensemble.

Single / Double Cast

Depending on the number of actors enrolled, we may double cast some or all roles. In these cases, performances will be split evenly between the two casts. If a show ends up with a single cast, some performances may be adjusted to ensure a great audience for our students.
