After a recent inspection, updated fire-safety codes call for a series of improvements to our 70-seat Black Box Theatre in downtown Louisville. It would be easy to treat this as just a list of fixes to get through. We see it as an opportunity to invest in the space our young performers love and make it safer and better than it has ever been.
The work costs $53,364. It is a big lift, and we are inviting the community that has believed in us for more than 25 years to help us meet it. Together, we can take this next step and set our stage up for many seasons to come.
Our goal is simple: complete the work this summer so we can raise the curtain on our fall season right here in the Black Box. Every gift gets us closer.
More than a room
Our Black Box Theatre is more than four walls and a stage. Since moving into the space in 2018, it has been the intimate home where young performers take the stage, build their confidence, and find their people, and where families fill the seats to cheer them on. It is also home to Tapestry Theatre, our program that casts actors with disabilities in leading roles. When you invest in this space, you invest in every young person who will stand on it next.

What your gift funds
We believe you deserve to know exactly what you are funding. One hundred percent of gifts to this campaign go toward the renovation and fire-safety upgrades to the Black Box Theatre. Here is what the work involves.
New backstage exit door
$16,206
To make our theatre more accessible and to provide additional exits in the event of a fire, we will install a new backstage door. This extends our options to exit the theatre and meets current fire code, which requires exit doors to be a certain distance apart.
Construction management and architecture
$10,640
We enlisted local leaders in construction, fire safety, city permitting, and architecture to organize and lead the project.
Electrical and exit signs
$10,488
We are adding outlets in the ceiling to help with the stage lighting. Current fire code does not allow extension cords or power strips to be used as a permanent solution. We are also adding new exit signs in the theatre and public hallways.
Fire alarm extension
$7,614
The fire alarm will be extended into the theatre, since it currently reaches only the public hallways.
Fire sprinkler adjustments
$4,776
Sprinkler heads will be lowered below the stage lights so nothing blocks their spread and coverage.
Air quality testing
$2,640
The chief building official requires a balance test of the theatre's ductwork to confirm the fresh air meets code.
Fireproof stage curtains
$1,000
We will replace our black curtains with new ones built using the latest fireproof technology.
Total project cost

Updated fire-safety codes call for these upgrades to our Black Box Theatre. This summer, our programs are running in alternate locations, but investing in the space now means our fall season can open in a fully upgraded Black Box.
Every dollar beyond our goal goes into reserve, so we can keep investing in the programs our kids count on.
